Visiting BAS:

It is always a good idea to contact Sunny before you take the trip to the Sanctuary. It is not unheard of for the directions to change due to construction or other unforeseen circumstances.  The Baja Animal Sanctuary is located just 25 miles south of the San Ysidro border crossing. We have volunteers who drive down to BAS all the time who are very willing to have you follow them to the Sanctuary your first time down, or, if you do not want to drive yourself, we have volunteers who you can carpool with. Either way it's a good idea to call or email ahead of time so we know you are coming.

Directions to BAS:

  • Take I-5 or I-805 South to the San Ysidro border crossing.


  • Once you cross the border, stay to the right (second lane from the right) and go up the ramp.


  • Get to the right lane and go over the “bridge”. This is an off ramp type overpass bridge with yellow painted concrete guard rails. The sign directly to the left of the entrance says “Scenic Route / Rosarito / Ensenda.”


  • Follow the signs to the Cuota (toll road) toward Rosarito. The toll is usually between $2.00 & $2.65. Continue on the toll road.


  • Take the second Rosarito exit off the toll road. The exit sign reads "Colonia Constitucion".


  • At the end of the exit ramp there's a McDonalds on the left... make an immediate, hard U-turn, and go up over the bridge. The road you will now be on is Art 27 Constitucional.


  • After the U-turn, you will reach one traffic light with a Pemex Gas Station on your left at the corner.


  • Take this to Blvd. Guerrero, which is the 4th stop sign. Make a right. If you cross Blvd. Guerrero, you will be on a dirt road and will have gone too far.


  • Follow the street until it looks like it dead ends (about ¾ of a mile). Make a left (Tabasco Street; it’s a dirt road).


  • Always bear to the right at the forks (but don’t make any right turns). This road takes you to the Sanctuary (about 2 miles) up the mountain.


  • You'll pass a mobile home on the right and then shortly after you'll see the big iron gates of BAS on the right.
